Locked Out of Your Lenovo? Here’s a Free Fix<\/h1>\n

Getting locked out of your own laptop happens more often than you’d think \u2014 a forgotten password, a stuck update, or a login screen that just won’t cooperate. If you’ve got a Lenovo laptop and can’t get back in, here’s a free walkthrough for doing a full factory reset yourself.<\/p>\n

Before you start:<\/strong> a factory reset erases everything on the laptop \u2014 every file, photo, and program \u2014 and it can’t be undone afterward. If there’s anything on there you need to keep, back it up first or call us before resetting. If it’s just a locked-out login and nothing you need to save, go ahead below.<\/p>\n

Method 1: Lenovo Novo Button (works even if the login screen won’t respond)<\/h3>\n
    \n
  1. Power the laptop all the way off (hold the power button ~10 seconds if it’s frozen on the lock screen).<\/li>\n
  2. Look near the power button or power connector for a small button or pinhole marked with a curved arrow icon \u2014 that’s the Novo Button. Its exact spot varies by model, so check both sides of the laptop if it’s not obvious.<\/li>\n
  3. With the laptop off, press it \u2014 a straightened paperclip or SIM tool if it’s a pinhole rather than a raised button. This opens the Novo Menu directly, without needing to log in.<\/li>\n
  4. Choose System Recovery from the menu.<\/li>\n
  5. Follow the on-screen prompts through to a full reset.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Method 2: From the Windows lock screen (if you can see the login screen and it just won’t accept the password)<\/h3>\n
      \n
    1. On the lock screen, click the Power icon in the bottom-right corner.<\/li>\n
    2. Hold Shift on the keyboard and click Restart at the same time.<\/li>\n
    3. The laptop will boot into a blue recovery screen instead of Windows.<\/li>\n
    4. Go to Troubleshoot → Reset this PC → Remove Everything.<\/li>\n
    5. If it asks “Local reinstall” or “Cloud download,” pick Local reinstall \u2014 it’s faster.<\/li>\n
    6. Confirm and let it run.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      What to expect<\/h3>\n

      The reset takes roughly 30\u201360 minutes. Keep the laptop plugged in the whole time \u2014 don’t let it die mid-reset. When it’s done, it boots up to the same “Let’s get started” setup screen as a brand-new laptop, and you’ll set up a new account from scratch.<\/p>\n
