Locked Out of Your Lenovo? Here’s a Free Fix
Getting locked out of your own laptop happens more often than you’d think — a forgotten password, a stuck update, or a login screen that just won’t cooperate. If you’ve got a Lenovo laptop and can’t get back in, here’s a free walkthrough for doing a full factory reset yourself.
Before you start: a factory reset erases everything on the laptop — every file, photo, and program — and it can’t be undone afterward. If there’s anything on there you need to keep, back it up first or call us before resetting. If it’s just a locked-out login and nothing you need to save, go ahead below.
Method 1: Lenovo Novo Button (works even if the login screen won’t respond)
- Power the laptop all the way off (hold the power button ~10 seconds if it’s frozen on the lock screen).
- Look near the power button or power connector for a small button or pinhole marked with a curved arrow icon — that’s the Novo Button. Its exact spot varies by model, so check both sides of the laptop if it’s not obvious.
- With the laptop off, press it — a straightened paperclip or SIM tool if it’s a pinhole rather than a raised button. This opens the Novo Menu directly, without needing to log in.
- Choose System Recovery from the menu.
- Follow the on-screen prompts through to a full reset.
Method 2: From the Windows lock screen (if you can see the login screen and it just won’t accept the password)
- On the lock screen, click the Power icon in the bottom-right corner.
- Hold Shift on the keyboard and click Restart at the same time.
- The laptop will boot into a blue recovery screen instead of Windows.
- Go to Troubleshoot → Reset this PC → Remove Everything.
- If it asks “Local reinstall” or “Cloud download,” pick Local reinstall — it’s faster.
- Confirm and let it run.
What to expect
The reset takes roughly 30–60 minutes. Keep the laptop plugged in the whole time — don’t let it die mid-reset. When it’s done, it boots up to the same “Let’s get started” setup screen as a brand-new laptop, and you’ll set up a new account from scratch.
